2010 Across the Lake Swim
Are you “The Right Stuff” for this Swim?
Every year the Across the Lake Swim attracts a new group of swimmers who want to challenge themselves with something they have never done before: To swim completely across Okanagan Lake, in Kelowna, right over the Ogopogo spawning grounds! For many, it is one of those “things to do before I die” challenges that gives a tremendous sense of accomplishment. And if you are one of those contemplating such a challenge, we encourage you to contact your local masters swim club to help you train for this event. We can help you get there.
The Across the Lake Swim also holds appeal for swimmers who participate every year. Some want to beat their previous time, many just want to remind themselves that they are still on top of their game. Some want to support or swim with a friend or family member, and some think it is just some great exercise or training for something bigger, such as a triathlon.
What better place to swim open water than our lake?
And some simply revere this great lake of ours. It is the lifeblood of our valley, and we are blessed that we can plunge into it year after year. It is still clean, deep, cool, and devoid of major industrial pollutants (Okay, the geese, those darn geese!). No freighters, no tides, no undertow, no currents, no salty after-taste. You can safely enjoy the rhythmical meditation of your stroke. So come and swim with us!
With our new website, we are able to get our online registrations started in earnest. We hope you will join us in setting another record of attendance at this year’s 61st Annual Across The Lake Swim. Make note, though, we are going to cap the swim at 400 participants, so get yourself registered promptly!

The City has responded to our request to add a buoy line just outside of the new Gyro Swim Loop buoys, to serve as a deterrent to boaters coming too close to swimmers. Despite this, boats (usually with water skiers in tow) continue to be noticed very close to the outer buoys, and even occasionally inside them, so a continued vigil remains important, as does brightly colored swim caps. The RCMP has been informed of our safety concerns, as has the marina at the Eldorado where boats fuel up. We will continue to inform the boating and water skiing community that there are swimmers out at Gyro every morning, all summer long. We hope that all users of this loop can also inform your boater friends to keep clear of the loop to keep everyone safe. If anyone captures a photograph of boats in or near the Loop, please contact us by sending them to:
The Okanagan Princess is a new luxury houseboat that we have been able to secure to both transport swimmers from City Park to the Old Ferry Dock, as well as to allow a limited number of spectators to enjoy the race from a moving “poolside” grandstand. We have offered this service in an attempt to relieve the very limited drop off and parking capacity on Old Ferry Wharf Road.
If you want to be ferried across to the start line, or you have supporters that want to watch the race, tickets we be made available on a first come, first served basis, for a maximum of 90 (swimmers only) to leave at 7:30, and 60 spectators and as many as 30 more swimmers to leave at 8 AM. All tickets are $5. You can pick up and pay for tickets on the race package pickup days (July 16 & 17).
It is now official: the new buoys for the Gyro swim loop are up! GPS’d at exactly 800m the loop will be instrumental in training for the Across the Lake Swim, triathlons and other open water swims.
